ObscureTags.com: old emphasis tag examples

Back in the old days, before we really had that new fangled CSS, we had to do things the hard way. With crazy tags like b. Code is a useful alternative to pre, but I'm not sure I ever saw anyone use things like dfn... and it's not clear to me at all what kbd is supposed to be. Keyboard text?

Whatever.

Here's a list of some of the old emphasis-type tags:
     i
     b
     dfn
     code
     samp
     kbd
     var
     u

What's so practical about b and i? Each tag requires seven characters to utilize - if you're writing an online ransom note I guess they'd come in quite handy.

Yeah same here, why would you want/need to use anything different? It's just so simple. I'm actually teaching myself html and i just guessed b, i and u.

I think many people still uses B and I and stuff like that.. at least I see it all the time.
It's practical as h*ll!

I still use b and i, mostly from bad habits picked up in learning HTML in 1994. Anything other than b and i makes HTML just that more complicated and impractical.
